The Future Mind: A Declaration of Mindedness

In the past there was the mind, the soul, and the body. In the future mind, the body will be the mind; the body will be the soul.

I read this at a Pageant of Futurity at NW Bookfest on October 19th, 2003.

In the past there was the mind, the soul, and the body. In the future mind, the body will be the mind; the body will be the soul.

We will know our bodies as we know our grammar. (By grammar I don’t mean the wisdom of a grammarian armed with a ruler. I mean a syntax for making meaning; a grammar expresses meaning from DNA as a grammar expresses meaning from the alphabet.) In the future, we will know our souls the way we know our bodies. We will know our souls as we know our grammar.

A mind is a physical object in space. From an absolute position on Earth, the North Pole for instance, we have coordinates for my mind here on the stage at the McCarthy Stage in Magnuson Park in North Seattle in the Cascade Region of the Pacific Coast of North America. These coordinated are the physical location of my mind which is a state of mind just as much as happiness is a state of mind. My mind is a product of its geographical history. My mind has a location and its presence displaces air when I am in the air and it displaced water when I am in water and it displaced sand when I am buried on the beach. My mind is physical. And my thoughts are physical, too. When I say this, my thoughts are physical, you may immediately think they are like pebbles or maybe earthworms. They could be gold fish. This isn’t right. My thoughts are physical the way leaves rustle in a tree, the way a river eases out of rapids into a placid pool of deep water edged with reeds and cattails. My thoughts are not grains of sand but the movement of sandbars which is to say my thoughts happen in physical space and with physical properties and that these thoughts happen in an absolute position on the earth that right now is on the Pacific Coast of North America in the Cascade Region of the Pacific Coast in North Seattle in Magnuson Park at the McCarthy Stage.

My mind began in physical space and my mind will end in physical space; my mind does not just experience the physical world but is the physical world.

Your mind is a physical object in space. From an absolute position on Earth, the north pole for instance, we have coordinates for your mind here in the audience at the McCarthy Stage in Magnuson Park in North Seattle in the Cascade Region of the Pacific Coast of North America. These coordinates are the physical location of your mind, which is a state of mind just as much as happiness is a state of mind. Your mind is a product of its geographical history. Your mind has a location and it displaces air when you are in the air and it displaced water when you are in water and it displaced sand when you are buried on the beach. Your mind is physical. Your thoughts too are physical, too. Your thoughts are not grains of sand but the movement of sandbars which is to your thoughts happen in physical space and with physical properties. These thoughts happen in an absolute position on the earth that right now is the Pacific Coast of North America in the Cascade Region of the Pacific Coast in North Seattle in Magnuson Park at the McCarthy Stage.

Right now, our thoughts are physically present, together.

In the past there was the mind, the soul, and the body. In the present, the body is the mind; the body is the soul.

We know our bodies as we know our grammar. We know our souls as we know our bodies. We know our souls as we know our grammar. This is the future mind.
